Flange Material Selection – From Carbon Steel to Specialty Alloys

The material selection for flanges directly affects the safety, reliability, and service life of piping systems. Different materials offer varying mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and temperature resistance, requiring rational selection based on specific operating conditions.

Carbon Steel Flanges are the most common type, offering good overall mechanical properties and machinability. ASTM A105 is commonly used for American standard carbon steel flanges, while 20# steel is typical for Chinese standards. Carbon steel flanges are relatively low in cost and suitable for conveying non-corrosive media such as water, oil, and gas under general temperature and pressure conditions.

Stainless Steel Flanges are renowned for their excellent corrosion resistance. Common stainless steel grades include 304, 304L, 316, and 316L. Among these, 316L stainless steel contains molybdenum, providing better resistance to chloride corrosion, making it suitable for marine environments and salt-containing media. Stainless steel flanges are widely used in industries with high hygiene and corrosion resistance requirements, such as food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and seawater desalination.

Alloy Steel Flanges excel in high-temperature and high-pressure applications. Common alloy steel grades include Cr5Mo and F91, as well as various chromium and molybdenum-containing alloys. These materials maintain good strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, making them suitable for high-temperature process piping in petroleum refining and thermal power generation.

Nickel-Based Alloy Flanges are used in more aggressive corrosive environments. Hastelloy, Inconel, and Monel offer exceptional corrosion resistance against strong acids, alkalis, and high-temperature corrosive media. Though more costly, these flanges provide long service life and are irreplaceable in High end applications such as chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, and marine engineering.

Low-Temperature Steel Flanges are specifically designed for low temperature applications. Materials like LCB and LC3 maintain good toughness and impact resistance at sub-zero temperatures, suitable for transporting liquefied natural gas and other cryogenic media.

Material selection for flanges requires comprehensive consideration of media corrosivity, operating temperature, working pressure, cost budget, and expected service life—achieving a balance between technical performance and economic viability.
